Will Haddrell takes victory in fifth round of Moongate Tour
Will Haddrell fired his way to a one-shot victory in the fifth round of the Moongate Tour at Port Royal Golf Course.
The amateur carded a one-over 72 in the 18-hole event to edge out professionals Chris Smith, Nick Jones and Camiko Smith, as well as fellow amateur Adam Perry, who all finished a further shot back.
The Moongate Tour has two monthly medals remaining on its 2022 calendar, with the top 18 finishers on the season-long Order of Merit qualifying for the Tour Championship in September.
Andrew Trott-Francis, co-founder of the Moongate Tour, spoke of his pride at the initial success of the series in offering local players the opportunity to play in regular high-level events.
“For the first year of the Tour, our focus was show evidence of proof of concept in promoting more competitive events for local players and I think we’ve nailed that down,” he said.
“Overall we wanted to give players the opportunity to play more often at a high level and it has helped fill the void of the absence of regular tournaments. Players have looked forward to the events and the demand is definitely there.
“I think the Tour has provided really competitive conditions and that’s been seen in the scores we are seeing at every event. What’s even more pleasing is that this is meant to be a developmental Tour but the level of golf has been incredibly high.
“It’s also been great seeing different winners, with amateurs as well as some of the professional players taking victories.
“The amateurs have been right up there throughout and what the Tour has done is bring the best players on island, both professional and amateur together and it’s great because you genuinely don’t know who is going to win.
“Damian Palanyandi might have won three of the events and be a slight favourite overall at the moment but he was sixth in the last event and so that goes to show you how competitive it is.”
Bermuda Professional Golfers Association memberJones leads the overall standings with 53 points, one ahead of amateur Palanyandi.
Haddrell’s latest victory has seen him climb to third on 35.5 points, fractionally ahead of veteran professional Dwayne Pearman, with Chris Smith rounding out the top five heading into the penultimate event.
