Bermuda’s struggles continued during the second round of the World Amateur Team Championships in Paris, France, yesterday.

The trio of Jarryd Dillas, Will Haddrell and Damian Palanyandi lost further touch on the leaderboard having slipped from 60th to 65th among the 71 countries competing at the biennial championships.

Bermuda carded a 14-over 158 at Le Golf National to soar to 29-over 315 at the halfway stage of the 72-hole event.

Dillas led the way for the second straight day with a four-over 76 that included a birdie and six bogeys.

Haddrell and Palanyandi carded identical 82s, with the latter’s score counting towards the island’s two lowest scores for the round.

“It was a grind out there today,” Gary Burnet, Bermuda’s non-playing captain, told The Royal Gazette.

“Le Golf National is a very long, tough but very good course that tests every aspect of your golf game. There’s no easy holes. So not only is it tough physically, it’s also very draining mentally.

“Jarryd, fighting a head cold, shot a pretty solid 76 that he was happy with.

“Will and Damian both hit the ball pretty well but really struggled on the greens, which have a lot of slope and are fast.

“The Bermuda guys don’t get to practise on greens this fast.

“Attitude is good, though, and we hope to move up the field tomorrow.”

Dillas is in a three-way tie for 141st on the individual leaderboard, Haddrell among five players tied for 187th and Palanyandi among a trio tied for 196th.

Meanwhile, Japan have a five-shot advantage at the top of the team leaderboard at 22-under 264, Italy are in second at 269, followed by France a shot back in third.

Norway made up the most ground on the leaderboard, jumping eight places from thirteenth into a two-way tie for fifth at 273.

The United States also made significant headway, having climbed from ninth to fourth at 271.

Taiga Semikawa, of Japan, tops the individual leaderboard at 15-under 128, with Italy’s Filippo Celli and Spain’s David Puig four shots back in a two-way tie for second.

Adrien Dumont de Chassart, of Belgium, carded the lowest round of nine-under 63, which included seven birdies and an eagle at the par-five 17th.
