This year’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship winner Seamus Power has continued his rise to prominence by being named in the Great Britain and Ireland side for the Hero Cup.

The team competition will pit a British and Irish team against one from Continental Europe over three days in Abu Dhabi from January 13 to 15 next year.

Irishman Power, who is leading the 2022-23 FedEx Cup standings after winning by a shot in Bermuda and recording two top-five finishes in the three events he has played so far, is one of 17 players selected for the event by Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald.

The former world number one got the chance to gauge Power’s game up close as he was also in action in Bermuda earlier this month and he will be running the rule over plenty of his Ryder Cup contenders in the Middle East.

The Hero Cup has been included into the calendar in an attempt to give Europe’s top golfing stars experience of a matchplay event with a view to the Ryder Cup, which is staged every two years and will next take place in Rome in September 2023.

Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari will captain the two teams in Abu Dhabi with Shane Lowry, Tyrrell Hatton, Ewen Ferguson, Rober MacIntyre, Callum Shinkwin, Jordan Smith and Matt Wallace joining Power on the British and Irish team.

Donald is hopeful that the new competition will provide perfect preparation for next year’s Ryder Cup.

Speaking to the British Broadcasting Corporation, Donald said: “We all thought it was important to combine experience and youthfulness and I think we have found that balance with a mixture of major champions and Ryder Cup players, alongside guys who are hoping to secure a spot in Rome next year.

“Some of our younger players have already shown incredible maturity in high-pressured situations and proved they can perform in big moments, so giving them the opportunity to compete on this stage will be really important at the beginning of what could be a big year for them.”
