Camiko Smith makes subtle gain on APGA Tour
Camiko Smith has regained some confidence after producing his second-best showing to date on the Advocates Professional Golf Association Tour in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Smith finished on seven over in a two-way tie for 22nd among the 53-strong field in the 36-hole event at the par-71 TPC Las Vegas layout after shooting an opening round of 75 on Monday and following up with a 74 in the final round to jump three places on the leaderboard.
The Bermudian professional’s best showing to date at this level is eighteenth, which he achieved on his Tour debut at the inaugural Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship at Port Royal Golf Course in October.
Also flying the island’s banner in Las Vegas was Daniel Augustus, who finished among four players tied for 41st at fifteen over.
Like Smith, the former Bermuda Open champion carded an opening 75 but found the going much tougher on the final 18 holes, which he played at eleven over to plummet 16 places down the leaderboard.
Overnight leader Wyatt Worthington II won this week’s APGA at Las Vegas by two shots at seven under, with fellow Americans Marcus Byrd and Salvador Rocha Gómez rounding off the top three at five under and one under respectively.
Worthington’s success denied Byrd a second successive win on the Tour after he blew away the field at the previous event in Florida on the way to a commanding ten-shot victory.
Reigning Moongate Tour champion Smith is a newcomer to the APGA Tour, while Augustus secured four top-five finishes last year, including second at the APGA Scottsdale and tied for second at the APGA Mastercard Tour Championship.
