Jarryd Dillas retains Bermuda Match Play title
Jarryd Dillas retained his Bermuda Match Play Championships crown on Sunday with a hard-fought win in the final.
With the semi-finals and final both played on the same day at Port Royal, it was stamina as well as skill needed to come out on top and the No.1 seed beat No.6 seed Damian Palanyandi 2 up in a tight final match.
Palanyandi had earlier knocked out last year’s runner-up Jevon Roberts in a thrilling semi-final when winning on the second extra hole after the match had finished all square on 18.
Dillas had an easier route to the final, opting to miss the medal round on Friday with his top seeding secured after last year’s success. With an easy 9 and 7 victory over Mackih McGowan in the first round and a 6 and 5 win over Harry Thompson in the quarter-final, Dillas had shown he was in good form and he was favourite heading into the final after dispatching No. 4 seed Adam Perry in the semi-final.
Last year’s women’s champion, top seed Kim Botelho, was not as successful as Dillas in her attempt to retain the title as she was knocked out in the semi-final 5 and 3 by eventual winner Ebonie Cox.
The victory for Cox set up a final date with Tracy Burgess, who had earlier beaten Alisa Sadeh in the semi-final, but the fourth seed produced some good golf to record a 6and 4 win.
The closest final of the day came in the Senior Men’s Division with all to play for coming down the 18th. It was No. 3 seed Steven Perry who eventually prevailed 1 up over 5th seed Geoffrey Piggott. He had earlier secured bragging rights in the semi-final by knocking out top seed Christopher Phillips.
