Scott Roy hungry for more Moongate Tour success

Scott Roy says he is “fired up” as he heads into the fourth round of the 2023 Moongate Tour championship at Port Royal Golf Course on Friday.

The 42-year-old is off to a flying start in this year’s Tour after winning two of the three events thus far, including the previous event at the course last month.

On that occasion Roy carded a seven-over 78 to win the 18-hole event by two shots over nearest rivals, professionals Chris Smith and Dwayne Pearman, who tied for second.

That victory has boosted the Turtle Hill Golf Club’s director of golf’s confidence and inspired him heading into today’s event.

“I am excited for Friday,” Roy told The Royal Gazette.

“I am feeling confident about playing and scoring and really excited to not be playing in 40-knot winds.

“I am feeling like my swing is there and consistent, and waiting to get the putter working like I know it can and keep the form going.

“It’s nice to be thought of as the one to beat again as it has been a while, and that fires me up.”

Roy will be competing among a field that includes the evergreen Pearman, Smith, Nick Jones, former European Tour player Kim Swan and promising youngster Oliver Betschart.

Among the amateurs who are expected to be in the hunt for honours is Jevon Roberts, who finished tied for first with Roy at January’s tour opener.

Fellow amateurs Gordon Cox and Roger Brangman rounded off the top five finishers at the previous event and will look to build on that momentum.

Among the noticeable absentees are newly crowned Bermuda Match Play champion Jarryd Dillas and Damien Palanyandi. Defending champion Dillas defeated Palanyandi 2 up in a tight final match at Port Royal on Sunday to clinch a tenth title overall.
