Oliver Betschart became the youngest player to win on the Moongate Tour at Port Royal Golf Course on Friday.

The 14-year-old shot an impressive one-under 70 to edge out fellow amateur Damien Palanyandi for the title by a solitary shot.

“It was fun. It was a roller-coaster ride but it was one of my goals for this year and I am so glad I could get that out of the way early,” Betschart told The Royal Gazette.

Betschart’s score eclipsed his previous best playing off the black tees at the Southampton layout, despite getting off to slow start that left him two over through six holes.

“There were a couple of tricky pin placements on the front nine on a couple of holes that got everybody a little bit,” he added. “I just had to kind of fight a little bit on the last couple of holes on the front nine.”

He eventually found his groove after rolling in two birdies to make the turn at one over, before shifting into overdrive as he birdied the first three holes on the back nine to quickly dip to two under.

“I kind of got on a streak which was unexpected but really nice,” Betschart said.

The Southern Texas PGA Junior Golf Tour player dropped a shot at No 14 but rebounded with a sixth birdie for the round at the next hole to go back to two under.

He also did well to save par at No 16 after his tee shot missed the green but was unable to repeat the trick after finding a greenside bunker on the last hole which he bogeyed.

“I kind of knew that’s where I needed to make up and down because I really wanted to shoot 69 and get into the sixties,” Betschart added. “That would have been my first time at Port Royal shooting in the 60s off of the black tees so that would have been nice.

“I just played a bit more sensible because I knew I couldn’t risk making double, so I just made my bogey. It wasn’t the way I wanted to finish but sometimes you just got to take what’s given.”

Meanwhile, Palanyandi was pleased with his round despite coming up just shy of victory.

“I shot even par 71 and could’ve been better. But nonetheless very happy with my performance today,” he said.

“Gave myself good looks at birdie all round and managed to hole some putts.

“Had it going through 14 but made some silly mistakes on 15 and 16 before bouncing back on 17.

“Congratulations and hats off to Oliver for his great round today.”

Amateur Justin Watts finished third at four over to round off the podium finishers.
