Super Bowl stars prevail in celebrity event at Port Royal
Super Bowl winners Richard Dent and Willie Gault and former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman captured bragging rights at the Bermuda Celebrity Golf Invitational held at Port Royal Golf Course on Thursday.
The trio came in at 14 under to pip the team led by Super Bowl champion and NFL Defensive Player of the Year Ed Reed, Jordan Swan, Jevon Roberts, Shane McDonald and Spencer Wideman for the title by a solitary shot.
Rounding off the top three at the Bermuda Tourism Authority organised event, a further shot back, was the team that included Vincent Young, Michael Phillips and Byron Chamberlain.
Dent, the two-times Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end, was delighted to come away from the captain’s choice event victorious.
“I had to stick with my team-mates and we did what we had to do,” he told The Royal Gazette. “I really enjoyed the golf course. Fortunately the wind wasn’t blowing hard so that was a good thing and we had a great time.
“The approaches around here, especially hitting uphill, you have to be spot-on.”
Like many of the stars here for Black Golfers Week, the former Chicago Bear and Super Bowl MVP is visiting the island for the first time.
“It’s my first time here and it’s so beautiful,” Dent added. “The people are nice, everything is clean and fresh and I can’t wait to get in the water.
“It’s always been in my mind where is Bermuda and I didn’t know it was so far north [in the Atlantic].
“I have been on the other islands and now coming here to me it’s a totally difference experience.”
Also putting together a solid round was the team of Byron Scott, the three-times NBA champion, and teenagers Oliver Betschart, Sienna Mosquera, Dylan Musso and Arman Newton, who came in at 11 under.
“I had a great group, Oliver, Dylan, Arman and Sienna,” Scott, the former LA Lakers shooting guard, said.
“Three of them were 14 and one was 16 and when you talk about some young people that can play golf, they can play.
“I had a lot of fun watching them hitting the ball and tried to contribute as much as I could. I didn’t have to do a lot and we were still 11 under.”
Scott, who also coached the Lakers, was making his second appearance at the Southampton course.
“The one hole I wanted some revenge on was 16, that par three,” he added. “Last time I was here, I hit it to the right.
“This time I hit it to the left, which wasn’t good, which means water, so I guess I will come back next year looking for revenge again. So far that one has beaten my butt every time.”
Also among the field was actor Anthony Anderson, who is perhaps best known for his leading roles in Black-ish, K-Ville, Law & Order and Guys with Kids.“My first time here but it will not be my last time,” he declared. “Beautiful island, beautiful people, beautiful culture and I am out here having a great time on the golf course.”
Anderson played alongside David Jenkins, Nicky Boorman, Tom Loomes and Randy Simons.
“I’d rather not talk about my horrible round of golf,” he added. “But I played with a great group of guys on a great course. It doesn’t get much better than this.
“Sixteen stands out, the par three, right on the water. That is a beautiful hole.”
Also mixing it up on the course was Super Bowl champion and NFL Defensive Player of the Year Warren Sapp.
“This is my first time here,” he said. “When I got ready to come after my high school graduation I had to go play in a high school football game so football has been eating up all of my island time but not any more.”
The former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and seven-times Pro Bowl player was among a team that also included local professional Camiko Smith, Rawn Rabain, Kia Wolfe and John Burcher.
Sapp was most impressed by Smith’s game.
“Camiko Smith might be one of the finest golfers I have ever seen,” he added.
“I jumped on his back and rode all 18. I was in great company.”
Sapp is also charmed by the island’s beauty.
“It’s beautiful, absolutely magnificent and the golf course immaculate,” he said. “When you can sit beside the ocean and play a course like this, it’s just carefree.”
Bo Jackson, the only professional athlete in history to be named an all-star in both baseball and American football, is also having a blast during his first visit to the island.
“A beautiful place, wonderful people, golf course is fantastic, I had a great time,” he said.
As for his team’s round, the 1985 Heisman Trophy and Pro Bowl winner added: “We had some highs and we had some lows, but overall the people that we’re playing with, great people that welcomed me here, we played from the first hole to the 18th hole like we grew up together, which is very, very good.”
The former Los Angeles Raiders running back and Chicago White Sox player is humbled by the challenges associated with the sport.
“The course will have it’s way with you at any time. You got to be on your p’s and q’s,” Jackson said.
“Golf is something that I enjoy. It’s my way of getting away from being Bo Jackson and it humbles me. So whenever I need to be brought back down a peg, I go play golf and it keeps me there.
“It let’s me know that you can come out here and have fun, but I am the boss anytime I want to be. So that’s what golf does to you, it humbles you.”
