Camiko Smith fell short in his bid to qualify for the Osprey Valley Open in Ontario, Canada, yesterday.

The professional was unable to secure one of the eight qualifying spots available for the PGA Tour Canada event after carding a three-over 75 in the 18-hole qualifier at the Nobleton Lakes Golf Club.

Smith got off to a promising start and was one under after rolling in a birdie at the par-five 7th hole.

However, he lost momentum after dropping two shots on the last hole on the front nine to make the turn at one over.

Another bogey at the 11th green put Smith further in arrears before his hopes were all but dashed after making a second double bogey of the round at the par-five 16th, but he managed to finish on a brighter note after getting up and down for birdie at the next hole.

Smith said the birdie opportunities he squandered on the front nine ultimately took their toll.

“I had a plan I stuck to and gave myself several good birdie chances on my opening nines holes,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“Unfortunately they didn’t go in and I had a few bad holes. I work extremely hard on my game and it’s feeling good, but I let a few shots get away from me which in return led to a few not-so-wanted scores.

“I am just in need of playing in more higher-calibre tournaments, which in turn breeds more consistency and a tighter game.”

As for the par-72 layout, Smith said: “The conditions of the course were great and a few of the greens were pretty challenging with subtle slopes.I managed my game fairly well and looking forward to making improvements.”
