Golfers help raise thousands for local men’s charity
A bumper field featuring some of the island’s top players battled wet and windy conditions for a charitable cause during the Fallen Heroes Memorial Golf Tournament held at Port Royal.
Nearly 100 golfers competed in the captain’s choice event that raised $5,000 which organisers Par 5 Golf Club of Bermuda have donated to local charity Daily Male Men’s Health Clinic.
“Through our combined efforts we were able to raise $5,000 for our charity of choice, which was for this year the Daily Male Men’s Health Clinic, spearheaded by Dr Johnathan Makanjuola,” club president Edwin Ford commented.
Ford also praised the staff at Port Royal for helping to make the 18-hole event, which was held on October 15, a success.
“The condition of the course and hospitality of the staff is a testament to the professionalism and hard work of all involved and was key to making this our signature golf tournament a huge success,” he added.
This year marked the 22nd anniversary of the tournament held in honour of late Par 5 Golf Club of Bermuda members.
“This tournament is to remember our 28 members who have passed away and the social group that got together to play golf many years ago have added to their club support for community,” tournament organising committee member George Albert Ratteray said.
“Each year the executive selects another part of our community to support with over thirteen recipients given over $100,000 over the years.
“This year we had 21 teams, 84 golfers, with teams, sponsors and Port Royal management and it was a huge success.”
Coping best in the trying conditions was the team of Craig Christensen, Jeffrey Lindo, Shawn Grant and Merkell Smith that won the title by three shots at eleven under.
“It was a showery day at Port Royal with winds blowing in the showers at 25 knots,” Ratteray added.
Second-place honours went to the team consisting of Kenny Ford, Gary Ford, Colin Swan and Par 5 Golf Club of Bermuda president Edwin Ford who finished at eight under.
Rounding off the podium finishers a farther shot back in third was the team comprised of Chris Wright, Shannon Trott, Bentley Gibbons and promising teenager Oliver Betschart, who will be making his PGA Tour debut at next month’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal.
