Daniel Augustus finishes third at APGA Farmers Insurance Finale
Daniel Augustus rallied down the home stretch to salvage third place in the APGA Farmers Insurance Finale at Tustin Ranch Golf Course in California on Thursday.
The Bermudian professional finished at even par and earned $5,000 in prize money.
“The conditions were tough, the greens were firm and fast and the wind was blowing 30-35 every day,” Augustus told The Royal Gazette.
The 36-year-old started the final round with a two-shot lead after carding an opening round three-under 69, but his advantage evaporated after he dropped four shots in the first seven holes.
With his chances of victory slipping away, Augustus finally managed a fightback on the back nine.
Back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th greens ignited the player’s comeback and, despite dropping another shot on the penultimate hole, he was able to clinch third place.
“Today I didn’t get great breaks and that’s the reason why I didn’t finish in first,” Augustus said.
“Yesterday I was able to make good out of bad situations and today I didn’t hit the ball as well. Got a few bad breaks and made one too many bogeys. It’s just a good learning experience and that’s what I am going to do. I am just going to continue to grow and get better.”
American Ryan Ellerbrock saved his best for last as he carded a five-under 67, the lowest round of the tournament, to come from four shots back and claim the title by three shots over compatriot Aaron Beverly, the only other player shooting under par in the final round.
The APGA Tour returns to Bermuda next month when Port Royal Golf Course will host the Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship from December 11 to 13.
