Camilo Legere wins Fecchio Cup
Camilo Legere hit a hole-in-one as he carded an impressive 58 to win the Fecchio Cup Junior Tournament by five shots at Turtle Hill Golf Club yesterday.
Legere, 15, aced the 11th as he improved on his opening day round of 66 to pick up the top prize in the more competitive Blue Division for players aged between 14 and 18.
Armat Newton finished second after he refined his first-day round of 67 with a 62, while overnight leader Dylan Muso slipped down to third after a round of 65, the same he shot on day one.
Legere credited his caddie, Terrence Corday, his father’s best friend, for playing a huge part in his maiden tournament victory.
“I think I played pretty well today,’’ Legere said. “Especially on the back nine, I think I had the lowest nine of my life, 25. The hole-in-one helped of course, brought that down on the 11th.
“I struggled a bit on the front but, other than that, on the back I had no bogeys, I kept it down to threes and lower.
“My caddie was a lot of help. Terrence was great out there on the greens with the wind judgement and club choice.
“It feels great, this is the first time I've ever really won anything like this in my life. I’m really grateful for everything, I hope I can play like this another time too.”
The Saltus Grammar School student revealed how the strong winds played a part in his hole in one.
“I hit a nice shot in there,’’ he said. “The wind helped, it was stronger than we thought, it brought it back, the ball took one bounce and went right into the hole. It was pretty crazy, everyone was screaming, it was really amazing.”
It was hugs all round when Legere putted for par on the 18th, since he was playing with those who were fighting for the top spot.
“I knew the three of us were tied after the front nine,’’ he told The Royal Gazette.
“I knew I had to play well going into the back nine. I was keeping an eye on it. It wasn't my main priority but I was pretty sure that I had two putts to win.
“I had a good shot on the 8th, my caddie told me it would be smart to club down, so I took the smaller club, left it on the front of the green and took two putts for par.”
Muso, 17, one of the Bermuda young golfers preparing for next month’s American Junior Golf Association Butterfield Bermuda Junior Championship at Port Royal, was disappointed to fall off the leaderboard.
“It wasn't a great day,” Muso said. “I thought it would get better but I just slipped up on the front. The back was a bit better but it could have gone a little better. Things just didn't go my way. I didn't get lucky, nothing really went my way.
“This has helped me a lot to prepare for the AJGA Junior Championship because it’s more tournament conditions.”
Ebonie Cox, the Bermuda Golf Association development officer, saluted the youngsters for putting up with terrible weather conditions over the two days.
“Considering the challenging elements and conditions, the children handled it well,’’ she said.
“For me, it was just refreshing and exciting to see so many young people. We had 30 plus from nothing.
“It’s our first tournament in five or so years, so I’m excited for what the future holds for junior golf in Bermuda.”
BGA general secretary Darrin Lewis is also excited about what lies ahead for the sport from a developmental perspective.
“This is the beginning of hopefully a lot more to come with junior golf,’’ Lewis said.
“We have the AJGA being held in Bermuda January 11 to 14, so we have four of our golfers from this tournament that are preparing for that.
“Dylan Muso, Armat Newton, Sa-Qui Robinson are the three here, the fourth one is Oliver Betschart, who is off island right now.
“We also have Sienna Mosquera. She is overseas right now but she will be back for that.”
