Bermudian pair Jarryd Dillas and Adam Perry found the going extremely tough during the opening round of the Latin America Amateur Championship in Panama yesterday.

Dillas carded a disappointing 83 and Perry 88, which was hardly the start they had hoped for heading into their round at the par-70 Santa Maria Golf Club layout.

“Today was obviously very disappointing,” Dillas told The Royal Gazette. “Not too many positives to take from the round other than I handled my emotions well and gave my best on each and every shot — all 83 of them.”

Dillas’s frustrating round included 11 bogeys, a quadruple bogey at the par-five 10th hole, as well as two birdies.

“Golf at this level is unforgiving and I need to do a much better job of preparing myself if I want to continue competing in events like the Latin America Amateur Championship,” he added.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to tee it up against the best players in the region for a spot in the Masters, US Open and British Open.

“However, there is also a certain responsibility that comes with attending this event.

“I think part of my frustration right now is that I feel like I’ve let myself down a bit.

“However, tomorrow is another day and I’m looking forward to the challenge of trying to bounce back with a good score.”

Dillas is tied for 97th among the 107-strong field heading into the second round of the 72-hole tournament.

Perry also endured his share of frustration during his round which included six bogeys, four double bogeys and a quadruple bogey also at the 10th which left him tied for last.

Mexican duo Omar Morales and Santiago De la Fuente and Guatemala’s José Arzú are tied for the lead at one under.

The top 50 players plus ties will make the cut after the second round and progress on to play the remaining 36 holes of the event.
