The delayed 2023 Moongate Tour Championship will finally take place at Port Royal Golf Course next week.

After a four-month delay, organisers have announced the tournament will take place on February 2 with the island’s top professional and amateur players now playing just 18 holes instead of two rounds at the par-71 Southampton course.

Originally scheduled to be held last September, the event has been postponed on multiple occasions owing to bad weather and scheduling conflicts.

“It’s been frustrating as an organiser trying to hold the event with all the rain and I am just happy that we have run into a patch of good weather,” Tour co-founder Chaka DeSilva told The Royal Gazette.

“Hopefully, fingers crossed, that it remains as such. I am excited for the future of the Moongate Tour. I know we haven’t had any events for a long time and most people are wondering what’s happened, but with the bad weather it’s been frustrating.

“Moongate is strong and we are still marching forward. We are hitting all of our goals again this year. Our Order of Merit winner [Scott Roy] was able to qualify for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship so we are happy with that.

“We are looking forward to a good event. Even though it’s going to be shortened by 18 holes, it should make for an exciting finish. We are excited to conclude the 2023 season and we look forward to going into 2024 excited and looking forward to the opportunities and a good season. Bigger and better.”

The field for the upcoming 2023 Moongate Tour Championship has yet to be confirmed but is expected to include Roy and fellow professional Camiko Smith, who won the inaugural Tour Championship at Port Royal in 2022 by a seven-shot margin.

The Moongate Tour is the brainchild of professionals Andrew Trott-Francis and DeSilva, and was created to afford more competitive opportunities for local professional and low-handicap amateur players.

The Tour was extended to nine events last year with Port Royal serving as the sole host after sharing hosting duties with Ocean View Golf Course during the inaugural 2022 campaign.
