Daniel Augustus suffers final-round disappointment at Torrey Pines
Daniel Augustus was left to ponder what might have been after a disappointing final round in the APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Invitational at Torrey Pines on Sunday.
The Bermudian professional was in contention for honours at the historic California course heading into the final 18 holes of the 36-hole event after finishing his first round just two shots off the lead when tied for third at even par.
However, Augustus played the front nine at three over after carding two bogeys and a double bogey, with his only birdie for the round coming at the par-three 8th.
The 36-year-old’s struggles then continued on the back nine, where four additional bogeys and two double bogeys put paid to his title hopes.
Augustus ultimately finished in a three-way tie for fourteenth at 11 over, which was good enough to earn him $1,500 in prize money.
Despite his struggles, the former Bermuda Open champion learned some valuable lessons.
“It was a great learning experience and I just have to continue to improve and get better,” Augustus told The Royal Gazette.
“I was struggling with my ball striking the entire time but I made some great up and downs and some good putts for bogey.
“I wish I had more time to practice on the South Course. I didn’t get to play a practice round on it and it plays totally different than the north course.
“I played the north course twice last year and twice this year. Had a practice round on it and it felt a little more comfortable.
“The South Course was a monster. The rough was pretty thick and like I said I was struggling a bit off the tee and that’s all it takes on that course, but on to the next one and I just have to keep my head up and keep working.”
The 2023 Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship winner Michael Herrera came from behind to win the championship and $30,000 in prize money by one shot over fellow Americans John-Baptiste Hakizimana and Kamaiu Johnson, who finished tied for second at three over.
Californian Herrera started the final 18 holes tied for third with Augustus and shot a two-over 74, which included three birdies and five bogeys.
Gabe Lench and Chase Johnson, also of the United States, rounded off the top-five finishers.
Florida resident Johnson finished tied for second at Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship at Port Royal Golf Course in December after starting the final round with a share of the lead.
