Oliver Betschart confident heading into Texas Junior Open
Oliver Betschart will be looking to continue his sparkling form when he tees off at the Texas Junior Open in San Antonio today.
The Bermudian became the first amateur and the youngest player to win the Moongate Tour Championship at Port Royal Golf Course this month and he now hopes to build on that at the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour event in Texas this weekend.
“It’s amazing to be coming off the Moongate Tour Championship win. It definitely gives me a boost of confidence,” Betschart told The Royal Gazette.
The 15-year-old is competing in the boys 16-18 division at the 54-hole event being held at the par-72 Golf Club of Texas.
“I am super stoked to be competing against these juniors out here and learn a lot from them and also all of the mentors that are here to give me advice and help me out,” Betschart added.
“I have played a practice round at the course and I am really looking forward to it.”
Betschart, who made his PGA Tour debut in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal last November, warmed up for the eventunder the watchful gaze of coach David Origin at his golf academy in Texas.
“I have already learnt so much with my coach. We’ve gone over a bunch of things which could use some improvement,” he said. “He’s gone over a couple of techniques that definitely could work for me and have been working.
“Everything has been going great so far, I have learnt lot and I am enjoying my time here and trying to get the best out of it.
“The focus is always to win at the moment. I am going to stick to the game plan and everything that me and my coach have been working on now; just sticking to it, focus up and learn as much as I can.
“This is gaining experience and knowledge, and being able to know what it’s like being out here a little bit more.”
