Oliver Betschart will take a two-shot advantage into the final round of the Texas Junior Open in San Antonio today.

The Bermudian is four over through 36 holes and will be looking to hold on to his lead when the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour event resumes at the par-72 Golf Club of Texas.

Betschart shot an opening round 76, which included five birdies, five bogeys and two double bogeys, in trying conditions on Saturday to enter the clubhouse among a four-way tie for the lead despite not feeling his best health wise.

“I have been feeling a bit under the weather now for the last couple of days,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“First day of the tournament I could not really make any putts and the weather conditions were really cold and pretty windy as well, but I ended up finishing yesterday’s round tied first with four other people.”

Despite persistent illness, the 15-year-old amateur fared better in the second round on Sunday with an even-par 72, which included three consecutive birdies on the front nine and as many bogeys, earning him the outright lead with 18 holes left to play.

“I still was not feeling great and pulled it together a bit with three birdies in a row,” Betschart added. “It was better conditions as well.”

The 2023 Moongate Tour champion, who made his PGA Tour debut in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course last November, will now attempt to preserve his lead over the final 18 holes.

“I have the solo lead at four over and two shots ahead of second place, so I am hoping for a good round tomorrow,” Betschart said. “Keep it together and play my game like I always do.”

American Grant Yerger is in second place followed by compatriot Charles Looker in third a farther shot off the lead.
