Daniel Augustus focusing on next round after putter fails to fire
Daniel Augustus shot 71 in the opening round of the Ocala Open at Candler Hills Golf Club in Florida on Wednesday.
The Bermudian professional finished level par around the 7,333 yard, par-71 layout, hitting 12 of 14 fairways and all but one green in regulation, but he felt he might have fared better had he converted his chances.
“It wasn’t a bad round of golf in any way, shape or form,” Augustus told The Royal Gazette.
“My ball striking was pretty solid but I just didn’t really make any putts. I didn’t putt badly and I was hitting my lines but the ball just did not drop and I had a lot of lipouts.
“I don’t know if I did not spend enough time putting and getting used to the greens because the practice greens are a little bit different than those course, so maybe that threw me off a little bit. I was under-reading a lot of them.
“They are a little bit grainier than the greens I have been playing on recently, so I was missing a lot of putts or was short. I just didn’t adjust to the speed of the greens very well today, but the good news is tomorrow is another day.
“Overall I am not really disappointed with the way that I played. Obviously I wish I had less putts, but there’s nothing I can do about that except go out there tomorrow and make some.
“I am overall happy with my round of golf, happy with the way that I am playing and tomorrow is another day – a day I have to use to make the cut.”
The 36-year-old remains upbeat over his chances of making the cut and progressing to the final round of the 54-hole event.
“I am going to be all right,” Augustus said.
“It’s just one day that the putter was cold and again it wasn’t necessarily cold. It was just misreading and under hitting a few so tomorrow is going to be a good day.”
Augustus is among a bunch of players at even par, eight shots behind leader Peter Creighton, who carded nine-under 63 in the opening round.
Augustus received a huge confidence boost after capturing his first win on the Moonlight Golf Tour this year at Stoneybrook West Golf Club in Florida last week.
He clinched the title in dramatic fashion with a 30-foot eagle putt at the par-5, 18th hole, which was enough to pip Indiana resident David Erdy on a tie-break.
