Professional golfers Nick Jones, Camiko Smith and Dwayne Pearman will have to wait at least another year to achieve their goal of competing in the US Open and US Senior Open Championships.

Jones tried unsuccessfully to qualify for next month’s 125th US Open Championship as an eight-over 79 left him well shy of the cut at a recent qualifier at the Fairmont Country Club in New Jersey.

“I didn’t get to play a practice round and was in position on the first hole to make an easy birdie but didn’t know there was some trouble beyond the pin and I got a little aggressive with it and ended up making a double bogey,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“With the US Open qualifiers being 18 holes it’s hard to come back from a double bogey on the first, but I am still plugging away.”

Smith also came up short of his objective after carding a nine-over 79 at another recent US Open qualifier at Whippoorwill Club in New York.

There was also disappointment for the evergreen Dwayne Pearman, who failed to clinch a spot in next month’s 44th US Senior Open Championship after shooting a five-over 77 in a qualifier at Cherokee Town & Country Club in Atlanta.

“I know I could have done better,” said Pearman, who competed in the inaugural Butterfield Bermuda Championship in 2019.

“I drove it good and putted good, but wasn’t too happy with some approach shots. I missed a few on the short side and with greens so fast it’s hard to get up and down.”

Jones was back in action on Wednesday as he was among the groups that teed off on the back nine in the afternoon in the opening round of the 19th Metropolitan Open Championship at the Country Club of St Albans in Missouri.
