Daniel Augustus and Nick Jones endure mixed fortunes in Illinois
Daniel Augustus rallied on the final day to sign off from the Advocate Pro Golf Association at TPC Deere Run on a good note on Wednesday.
The 37-year-old professional battled his way back from a disappointing opening round 82 at the Illinois golf course the previous day with an even par 71, which included four birdies and as many bogeys, to jump 16 places on the leaderboard and finish tied for 38th at 11 over on 153.
Augustus was one of two Bermudians competing in the 36-hole championship as compatriot Nick Jones was also among the field.
Jones shot an opening round 75 but plummeted 13 places down the leaderboard after carding 80 in the final round, which included four double bogeys, two bogeys and a birdie, to finish two shots back of Augustus tied for 44th at 13 over on 155.
Augustus, who has nine top-five finishes and a best showing of second competing on the APGA Tour, finished tied for eleventh competing in last year’s 36-hole APGA at TPC Deere Run championship.
Jones was making his debut in this tournament and his first appearance on the APGA Tour since being granted exemption to compete at that level after finishing tied for fifth on his debut in the Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship at Port Royal Golf Course last December.
The Port Royal Golf Course teaching professional has had plenty of exposure playing competitively in the United States over the past few weeks after competing in a US Open qualifier in New Jersey; a Minor League Golf Tour event in Florida; and, more recently, at the 19th Metropolitan Open Championship in Missouri.
Ryan Ellerbrock won the APGA at TPC Deere Run by one shot from fellow American Luis Gagne with a seven under, 135.
Marcus Byrd, who finished tied for second in the inaugural Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship at Port Royal Golf Course in 2022, finished third two more shots back to complete a sweep of the podium by American players.
