Oliver Betschart finishes fourth of 170 players in under-16 Scottish Open
Oliver Betschart has finished tied for fourth at the Scottish Boys’ Under-16 Open Championship.
From a strong field of 170 players who teed off on Tuesday, the promising golfer finished tied on six under, five shots behind winner Mathias Aase, of Norway, among some of the best European players at this level.
“All in all it’s an amazing tournament and I loved the competition out here,” Betschart told The Royal Gazette.
“It was great to play against all these guys that are at the top European level.
‘“It's really eye-opening to see all the great golf going on out here and being able to keep up, me just the town Bermuda boy. It’s been a great experience."”
Betschart shot under par in each of the three rounds of the 54-hole event, which was held at Murrayshall Golf Club in Perth.
He carded a sizzling three-under 69 in the opening round, which he followed up with a one-under 71 in the second to make the 36-hole cut, with the top 60 players and ties advancing to the final round.
The 15-year-old started the final round in fifth place, trailing overnight leader Harry O’Hara, and got off to a flyer after carding three birdies on the first five holes.
Betschart lost some momentum after dropping shots at the 8th and 10th holes but bounced back in spectacular fashion to birdie four of the remaining eight holes to end on a solid note.
“Today’s round started good with two birdies on the first three holes and it was pretty steady from there until the 8th, where I ended up making a bogey and on No 10 as well,” he said.
“Those were just missed putts and a tricky situation, but I kept my head straight and made sure I focused on the next shot and didn’t let my mind wander like in the past, so I ended up birdieing 12, 15 and 17 coming in.
“I felt really good out there and birdied all the par-fives today. Conditions were a bit better today but still a bit windy at the start of the round
“Once we got out there I just kept my head down and focused, but I also had a lot of fun with the guys that I played with.”
Overnight leader O'Hara finished one shot behind the victorious Aase in second, with Ireland’s Harris Fleming rounding off the top three a farther two shots off the lead.
