Golfers to honour Brian Morris in second closest-to-pin competition
Government House will host the second annual Brian Morris Closest to The Pin Charity Event on Saturday.
Participants will compete for prizes in their respective categories during the competition held in memory of the former Ocean View Golf Club head professional , with proceeds to go towards the Brian Morris Educational Award, which is overseen by Friends of Hospice/Agape House.
Cheryl-Lynne Thompson, the Ocean View Golf Club president and organising committee member, said she is delighted to continue Morris’s memory and legacy by staging an event he founded.
“It’s a matter of just being able to hold the event and carry on the desire and wishes of Brian,” she told The Royal Gazette.
“We are just hoping for a good turnout and everything turns out fine. We decided on a shorter distance this year in order to make it more reachable for everybody in each category, even me.”
Morris passed away in January last year aged 55 after a long battle against brain cancer but came up with the concept of the competition in an attempt to strengthen the relationship between Government House and the community and to raise funds for a charity of the Governor’s choice.
After his proposal was approved, Morris met with the Governor, Rena Lalgie, to discuss preliminary details of the event but passed away just two weeks later. However, his fellow organising committee members decided to go ahead with plans to stage the competition in his honour with the Governor choosing Pals as last year’s beneficiary.
More than 100 male and female participants, from the age of 6, took part in the inaugural event, with the Governor taking the first swing at the pin after offering her official opening remarks to kick off proceedings.
The event raised $2,600, which was donated to Pals.
Marshall Minors claimed the title among the professionals with his effort finishing 8ft 7in away from the hole.
Michael Newton beat Luis Martins in an exciting play-off to capture the men’s title after their initial efforts both landed 2ft 5in from the pin.
Ladies honours went to Katrin Burnie (3ft 10in), while Lachlin Soutter (3ft 9in) won the 11-15 junior category and Hunter Roy (13ft 2in) took home the title among those aged 6 to 10.
The event on Saturday will be held between 10am and 4pm and anyone interested in taking part can register in advance by calling 542-4360 or 533-4333 or at Government House on the day of the competition.
