Oliver Betschart up for R&A Junior Open challenge in Scotland
Oliver Betschart hopes to pick up where he left off in the R&A Junior Open, which gets under way in Scotland on Monday.
The Bermudian golfer is coming off an impressive fourth place showing at last week’s Scottish Boys’ Under-16 Open Championship in Perth, where he shot under par in each of the three rounds, and is keen to keep that momentum going.
“I think the biggest thing for me that also worked last week was just focusing on playing the course,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“I am going to try to beat the course as good as I can without focusing too much on the competition.
“That's pretty much what my mentality is going into this event; just focus on playing the course and looking forward to some great competition, and hopefully see some good scores out there."
Betschart is confident heading into the 54-hole stroke-play event after proving he can compete against the best European golfers at this level last week.
“It’s inspired me to strive to be more confident and I definitely know that I can compete with these guys out here with the showing that I had last week,” he said.
“I am feeling good and definitely ready to get going with this event.”
Betschart is making his second appearance in the tournament having finished tied for 59th on his debut at the event two years ago.
“I loved the experience and it was amazing,” he said.
“I loved the atmosphere and everything about the event, so I am really glad to be back and representing Bermuda here in the Junior Open 2024.”
The R&A Junior Open is being held at the par-72 Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club located on the outskirts of Troon on Scotland’s southwest coast.
