Sienna Mosquera impressed on her debut at the Canada Junior Championship held at Kanawaki Golf Club in Montreal last week.

The 18-year-old finished runner-up among the field of 15 in the girls’ 14-18 division at 13-over 153, six shots back of American winner Veronika Niklin.

Mosquera shot 76 in the opening round of the 36-hole championship to grab a share of second with Canadian Charlotte Boudreau, four shots behind early pace-setter Niklin.

The Mike Bender Golf Academy student was unable to reel in Niklin in the final round, with a seven-over 77 leaving her all alone in second.

“I was very happy with my performance in the Canada Junior Championship,” Mosquera told The Royal Gazette. “I came into this tournament just wanting to play my very best and I knew if I could achieve this I had a chance to place.

“I felt very consistent with my shots. I was hitting the fairways and averaged 240 yards with my drives, outdriving my opponents on the majority of holes, which helped my set-up for my next shot, placing me into good positions on the longer par-fours and par-fives.

“Of course, I had a few mistakes that could have been avoided, but that’s just something I’m working on right now.

“For example, I noticed my short game wasn’t as strong as it should have been and I could have gotten a few chips closer to the hole to save par.

“But I know what I am going to be focusing on for my next tournament; otherwise, it was a solid two days of playing.”

Mosquera thoroughly enjoyed playing in the event and hopes to see other Bermudians afforded the same opportunity to showcase their talents there in future.

“This was my first time playing in the Canadian championship, which was a really great and fun tournament that I hope Bermuda’s junior golfers can work towards to compete in,” she added.

“The hospitality at Kanawaki Golf Club was incredible and I was very excited that I had the opportunity to compete there and also place.

“The field was very competitive since we all had to qualify to get into this tournament, so I was able to play against some great players.”

Mosquera was bidding for the sole qualifying spot up for grabs in Montreal for the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship in Louisiana.
