Jones struggles on APGA Tour in New York
Nick Jones’ struggles on the Advocates Professional Golf Association Tour continued at the Farmers Insurance Fall Series in New York this week.
The professional golfer finished 35th of 37 at 14-over 156 in the 36-hole tournament, which concluded on Thursday at Bally’s Golf Links at Ferry Point in the Bronx.
Jones carded 77 in the opening round and endured an even tougher time in the second on the way to a 79, which included two birdies, eight bogeys and a double bogey.
American Wyatt Worthington II won the tournament by a solitary shot over compatriot Donald Kay. Chase Johnson, also of the United States, rounded off the top three finishers another two shots off the lead pace at four under.
Jones’ frustrating experience was in sharp contrast to the euphoria of having qualified for the PGA Tour Butterfield Bermuda Championship for a second time in three years at Port Royal Golf Course four days earlier.
The 34-year held his nerve when it mattered most to prevail in a marathon five-hole play-off with amateur Adam Perry and clinch the third and final qualifying spot.
Professional Camiko Smith and amateur Eric West secured the other two local qualifying spots.
Smith is now primed to make his third appearance and West his second in successive years in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship to be held at Port Royal, November 14-17.
Jones was granted full exemption to compete on the APGA Tour for this year after finishing tied for fifth on his debut in the Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship at Port Royal Golf Course last year.
Compatriot and fellow professional Daniel Augustus also competes on the APGA Tour but was not among the field at this week’s event in New York.
Port Royal will again host the Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship, December 2-4, featuring local professionals Quinton Sherlock Jr and Scott Roy and amateur Perry.
