Flawless Smith savours maiden Johnnie Walker Classic victory
Camiko Smith continued his sparkling form by capturing his maiden Johnnie Walker Classic title at Ocean View Golf Course on Sunday.
The 39-year-old signed off with a brilliant six- under 134 that left him two shots clear of nearest rival and fellow professional Nick Jones.
Smith held a share of the lead with Jones heading into the final round and pulled away from the rest of the pack after producing a flawless bogey-free 66 that included four birdies in the rain at the Devonshire course.
“I finally got one and it feels pretty sweet winning my first Johnnie Walker,” an elated Smith told The Royal Gazette. “It was great and I had my mother [Pam] on the bag so I feel really, really good.
“I am trying to get one per cent better every day and I am doing that so it’s paying off.
“I was pretty solid and steady over the two days, especially on Ocean View’s greens which can a bit tricky at times. I just treated it as another tournament; just come in and do what I have to do and I feel very solid.”
Joint overnight leaders Smith and Jones both carded an opening round 68 to take a one shot advantage over defending champion and fellow professional Dwayne Pearman into the second round.
“The goal was to get out there and get out in front and see what we can do,” Smith added. “I knew that Ocean View was pushing at least four-under and nobody got there, not even myself.
“I was there at some point [first round] and then I dropped back. But it was there, and I just had to do it, and I did it today in the second round.”
The win was Smith’s second in ten days having also topped the field in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship Local Qualifier at Port Royal Golf Course to qualify for the PGA Tour event for the third time.
“I feel very good so my expectations are high. Coming into this I had expectations to win, and so here we are,” he added.
“I am slowly peaking but it feels good. I am striking the ball well and putting really well, my putting has been good.
“My mind has gotten sharper so I have been trying to push myself and see how far I can take this golf thing. It's a big world out there and I am just trying to swim around in it.”
Runner-up Jones, who has also qualified for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal in November, shot 68 in the second round to finish at four-under while defending champion Pearman rounded off the top three at even par.
“I hit the ball OK and putted well,” Pearman said.
“I didn’t hit the ball too bad. I shot one under yesterday which was a pretty good score after making an eight on the tenth hole. It was a good score considering.
“Today I just didn’t get nothing really going. Had one of two birdies and that was it and double bogeyed again.”
Pearman also hailed Smith’s solid display in the trying conditions.
“Camiko played really steady and I was pretty impressed with his game,” he added. “He played pretty steady and hats off to him as his game is looking pretty good.”
Quinton Sherlock Jr finished at one over and top amateur player Damian Palanyandi another shot off the lead pace to round off the top five positions on the leaderboard.
Bermuda Professional Golfers Association president Sherlock also competed in the recent Butterfield Bermuda Championship Local Qualifier at Port Royal where he clinched one of the available berths for the Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship to be held at the same venue in December along with fellow professional Scott Roy and amateur Adam Perry.
