Oliver Betschart in contention for final Butterfield Bermuda Championship spot
Oliver Betschart is competing in the Gosling’s Invitational knowing it is his final chance to qualify for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
Betschart, the island’s top amateur, is one of 59 golfers trying to secure the remaining spot in the PGA Tour event at The Goslings Invitational, which started on Tuesday at Belmont Hills, continues at Mid Ocean Wednesday and concludes at Port Royal on Thursday.
The winner will receive a PGA Tour exemption into the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, to be held at Port Royal from November 14 to 17.
Betschart, who at 15 became the youngest player to play in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event since 2014 when he made his debut in last year’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship, is tied for fifth after the first round, four shots behind Scotland’s Graeme Robertson, who carded a six- under 64.
“I’m trying to get that spot in the PGA Tour event,’’ Betschart said.
“This is my second chance at redemption now to get that final spot, and I’m going to work as hard as I can. I’m just going to play my game, enjoy the tournament and deal with some tricky conditions over the next couple of days.
“I’ve got the home-field advantage at Port Royal on Thursday and I’m going to make the best of it.
“I might be four shots off the lead at the moment, but I’m feeling confident and I’m feeling good about playing in the wind on Thursday.
“I played with Graeme Robertson and he was just amazing to watch. Playing in Scottish conditions has probably helped him. He knows how to play in the wind; it was pretty windy up at Belmont, and he knew what to do.”
