Young golfers crowned at ICS/Cobra Puma Junior Championship
Arman Newton, Darina Betschart, Cole Graham and Daniel Dalene won their respective categories at the Island Construction Services/Cobra Puma Junior Golf Championship at Ocean View Golf Course yesterday.
Newton, 15, took the honours in the boys 14 to 16 division, winning by 13 shots over Sa-Qui Robinson after shooting an opening round of 73 on the first day and 74 on day two, with Ramsay Soutter finishing in third position.
“It’s a great feeling because I enjoy winning,’’ Newton said.
“I played well out there, but obviously there’s room for improvement. Winning was my goal when I came into this tournament and I was confident I was going to win.
“It was quite windy so I had to hit some knock-down shots. Putting was good, it saved me some strokes and lost me some, but that’s golf.”
Newton put the win down to consistency with his irons and good approaches to the green.
“My iron play won it for me and I hit lots of greens, which is important,” he said.
“I also struck the ball very well and that’s what matters. Monday was the better day for me, I just had one bad hole, and I shot 74 today, which is four over.
“On the first day there was definitely competition between Sa-Qui and I. He was one shot worse than me, but today I was better than him and finished 13 shots clear of second.
“I would love to play golf at a higher level with my long-term goal to play on the PGA Tour. I just want my future to involve golf because that’s the sport I enjoy playing.”
Betschart, 13, proved that her brother Oliver is not the only talented golfer in the family, when she saw off the challenge of Juliana Gakundi in the girls competition.
“It feels amazing to win this since I haven't won something for a while,’’ Betschart said.
“Juliana was a pretty good competitor and she had some really good shots. I played better on the first day but on the second I struggled a bit on the back nine but pushed through the last few holes.
“I’m working on getting on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour, that’s where I see my future in golf.”
Cole Graham came out tops in the boys 11 to 13 age group, with the oldest in the age group finishing 20 shots ahead of Charles Smith at the end of the two days.
“It feels great to get my first tournament win,’’ the 13-year-old said. “It was a bit better for me on the first day, but I fell on the last nine of today with a couple of bad scores.
“The other competitors were younger than me, but the competition was tough and we had lots of fun.”
In the novice division, in which competitors played only nine holes, Dalene held off challenges from Cruz Tavares and Mason Durrant.
Speaking after presenting trophies to the winners, Zane DeSilva, the Island Construction chief executive officer, pledged continued sponsorship for one of the island’s three junior golf events.
“As a sponsor, I can say that as Island Construction, this is one of the tournaments that we love to sponsor,” DeSilva said. “I look forward to this tournament growing all the time.”
OJ Pitcher, the tournament director and Ocean View acting head professional, was pleased with the number of competitors after the event was postponed earlier in the year because of low numbers.
“We were forced to postpone this tournament in July because the numbers were just low,’’ he said.
“We had 12 registered at that time and now we had 23 players. We’ll have the event in the second week of July next year and hopefully most of the families don’t have travel plans at that time.
“This event was initiated by the late Brian Morris in 2022, and we’ll continue to have it in his honour.”
