Oliver Betschart retains Gosling’s Moongate Tour title

Oliver Betschart came from behind to become the first golfer to successfully defend the Gosling’s Moongate Tour Championship.

Betschart, who also became the first multiple winner of the event, trailed overnight leader Nick Jones by a shot, but made a mockery of the challenging wet and blustery conditions to card a sensational round of two-under 69 to win by three shots and claim $1,000 in prize money.

After moving level with Jones, who dropped a shot on the opening hole, Betschart grasped the outright lead for good with a birdie on the 3rd hole, where his rival carded another bogey.

“It's a great feeling to defend my title and awesome being back-to- back winner here,” an elated Betschart, who finished the tournament at even par, told The Royal Gazette.

“I am just imagining that in ten to 15 years’ time, they are going to go back in the records and see who won it the first couple of times, so it will be cool to have my name in the history book of the Gosling's Moongate Tour.”

The 16-year-old amateur carded four birdies and two bogeys on the way to the lowest round of the tournament in spite of the adverse weather conditions.

“I was wondering if we were going to play but we ended up fighting through it,” Betschart said.

“I knew it was going to be challenging out there but I was really happy with my performance. I kept my head down and got it done.

“I talked to my coach [David Ogrin] in the morning and I had some mental questions for him that I struggled a little bit with on Friday and I got those answered.

“We pretty much decided on every shot that my swing thought is going to be just focus and trust the process, and it worked. I was really confident out there and played as good as I could.

"I wasn’t really sure what to expect with how the conditions were, but it was a fight.“

Betschart was three under for the round heading to the last hole, where he dropped a shot after his initial tee shot landed in the left side fairway bunker.

“I made bogey on the last hole and it was a bit of a bummer to finish like that, but it was a good round other than that,” he said.

“This was the season finale for me, so it was really special to be able to come through with a victory. I am looking forward to next year and it should be a good field. Everyone is improving every year so it gets more and more challenging.”

Kenny Leseur carded an even-par 71, the second-lowest round of the tournament, to finish runner-up at three over par and pocket $800 in prize money for his efforts.

Leseur was flawless on the front nine, which he played at four under after carding two birdies and an eagle at the par-five 7th hole, but was unable to make any further headway with four bogeys after making the turn dashing his title hopes.

“Was frustrating to start that well and finish the way I did,” Leseur said.

“But that is golf and I definitely learnt a few things for the future about my own game that will help my play very well next year and beyond.”

Overnight leader Jones carded a 77 to round off the podium finishers in third at seven over for the tournament and pocket $700 in prize money.

The professional endured a frustrating time as he carded six bogeys, three either side of the turn, and failed to make any birdies or better.

Gosling’s Moongate Tour Order of Merit winner Dwayne Pearman finished at nine over for the tournament and fellow professional Camiko Smith another shot back to round off the top five finishers on the leaderboard.
