Eric West impressed on his debut at the Orlando International Amateur in Florida.

The former Tour de las Americas player did himself and the island proud, making the cut at the first attempt and finishing in a three-way tie for 45th at five over par in a formidable 200-strong field at Mission Resort + Club.

West opened with a 77, followed by rounds of 71 and 72 in the 54-hole event, which concluded at the Howey-in-the-Hills golf course on Monday. It was the 41-year-old’s first outing since missing the cut at his second consecutive appearance in the PGA Tour Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course last month.

“Game was a little flat at times, but overall I hit the ball really well, and the changes I made to my swing with my new coach are taking shape,” West told The Royal Gazette.

“Invariably, I’ve been spending a lot of time on the full swing, and my chipping and putting didn’t show up this week, but I’m happy to make the cut.”

West was the oldest player in the field by a significant margin.

“I was the oldest player in the field by probably 15 years and was really excited to get accepted into this event, make the cut, and hold my own against the best amateurs in the world, which is a step in the right direction,” he added. “Super international field and the best amateur event in the world at this window.”

China’s Mingbo Jiang finished at seven under to edge Frenchman Octave Bailo for the title by a single shot. American Palmer Haynes rounded off the top three, a further two shots back.
