Phillips Swift and Kayla Black were crowned champions at Port Royal Golf Course on Sunday after the third and final round was cancelled because of adverse weather conditions.

Play began despite the blustery conditions but tournament officials decided to bring proceedings to a halt, with the 36-hole leaders in the boys’ and girls’ divisions being declared as the winners.

Swift, from the United States, claimed the boys’ title by one shot with an even-par 142.

The Mercer University student shot 73 in the opening round followed by an impressive two-under 69 in the second on Saturday to surge to the top of the leaderboard and secure the title.

South African Noah Peens finished runner-up with a one-over 143, while American Pavel Tsar finished third, a further shot back.

Americans Mihir Roperia and Andrew Tsar tied at three-over 145 to complete the top five competitors among the 45-strong boys’ division.

Overnight leader Gabe Schmitz, also of the US, struggled in the second round and fell out of contention, ultimately finishing in a nine-way tie for eleventh at six-over 148.

Arman Newton was Bermuda’s top performer in the boys’ field, finishing in a five-way tie for 29th at 14-over 156.

The Devonshire resident was disappointed the final round was cancelled but appreciated the opportunity to test his skills against some of the best junior golfers in the world.

“It was a fun tournament, played in tough conditions,” Newton told The Royal Gazette.

“Round one was extremely windy, but I managed it well and played all right. Round two’s weather was great. However, I did not capitalise and shot 78, the same as round one.

“Sadly, the organisers cancelled round three due to the wind, which was a shame. Big thanks to Port Royal and the Bermuda Golf Association for hosting this event and selecting me to play in it. It was a fun experience!”

Also representing Bermuda in the boys’ field was Johnny Bart, who finished in a three-way tie for 38th at 18-over 160, and he also enjoyed competing at this level.

“I felt it was a very good experience and was a lot of fun,” he said.

“The conditions on the first day were really tough. The second day wind was much less, and I was able to string together a decent round (77).

“This was a very fun event, and I am grateful for Port Royal, the Bermuda Golf Association and the American Junior Golf Association.”

Black held a three-shot advantage heading into the second round, which the Canadian maintained after shooting 74 to finish at three-over 145, one shot clear of runner-up Juliana Hong, of the US.

American Ava Osborne finished third, a further two shots off the lead at 148.

Rebekah Im, also of the US, finished fourth at 149, while Canadian Riviera Lindholm rounded off the top five, another two shots back at 151.

Darina Betschart (File photograph supplied)

Darina Betschart, the only Bermudian among the 20-strong girls’ field, finished nineteenth at 32-over 174.

“I did not play my best rounds, but it was a great learning experience and congrats to all the winners,” she said.

“I made a lot of new friends and hope I get the opportunity to play in this event again next year.”
