‘We’ve been runners-up three times so it was great to get a win’
Jevon Roberts has expressed his delight at being one half of the winning team at the Bermuda Four-Ball Championships last weekend.
Roberts and playing partner Oliver Betschart picked up the title for the first time after a string of near misses at Port Royal Golf Course, and he was delighted with the one-shot victory over James Godwin and Christopher Ford.
“This is our first time winning it and we have played it together four times,” Roberts said.
“We’ve been runner-up three times in a row, so it was nice for me to start off in my first BPGA event of the year with a win. I was very excited to get the win and playing with Oli is very special and was an absolute blast.
“I’m excited to see what is going to happen for the rest of the year and try to keep the good play continuing.”
Roberts more than played his part in the win but was happy to deflect praise to Betschart, who made a crucial eagle at the 17th in the final round to ensure victory.
“We played really well but Oliver was by far the star of the show,” Roberts said.
“He is such a good golfer and we ham and egged it the way you are supposed to in these type of events. We only made two bogeys over the two days and that is something we were really trying to eliminate, so when Oliver didn’t play well, I was able to step in and it was the same the other way round.
“We did the right things at the right times, which is how we were able to put up a good number on both days.”
Roberts and Betschart held a two-shot lead going into the second day and played alongside their nearest rivals in the final round, which allowed the team to keep a close eye on the scores as they played the back nine.
“We bogeyed the first hole on Sunday, so we had just a one-shot lead all the way around until 17,” Roberts said.
“We were playing with James and Chris, so we were able to see what they were doing first-hand but it would have been foolish to only focus on them when there were quite a few other really good teams behind us.
“Damian [Palanyandi] and Jarryd [Dillas], for example, have not won this thing four times in a row by being bad players. If they had got hot they could have easily shot six under if their putters were working.
“I knew if we got to nine under total it would mean somebody else posting something magnificent to catch us. Thankfully eight under was enough.”
