Top-20 finish for Oliver Betschart in Texas Cup
Oliver Betschart reckons there are positives to take from his top 20 finish on debut at the Texas Cup Invitational.
The 16-year-old amateur finished in a five-way tie for 20th in the 54-hole tournament, which concluded on Wednesday at the Rayburn Resort in Brookeland, Texas.
Betschart shot 72 in the opening round, which he followed with a 71 in the second round and 72 in the final round to finish at five-over for the tournament.
Despite committing costly errors, the Moongate Tour champion is pleased with his overall performance.
“I shot 72, 71, 72 and while I made a few too many mistakes that led to big numbers, there were definitely a lot of positives to take away,” Betschart told The Royal Gazette.
“My putter came through for me when I needed it, and I’m really happy with how I’m striking my irons and wedges. The work I’ve put in with my coach [David Ogrin] on my short game is paying off and I can see the progress.
“The course was soft, so it was all about carry distance and I struggled at times to put myself in the right spots off the tee, which made things tougher on a tight layout like this.
“Overall I’m happy with parts of my game, but I know I can go lower. If I clean up the big numbers and keep giving myself chances, the birdies will come.”
Betschart headed into the tournament on a high having captured the 15 to 18 boys title at the Prestige Tour Hill Country Open in Fredericksburg, Texas, last week.
Shiv Parmar (nine-under) won the Texas Cup Invitational by four shots from fellow Americans Coltrane Mittag with Noah Chauvin third.
