Moongate Tour starts new season at Port Royal
Some of the island’s top golfers will compete for early bragging rights in the opening round of the 2025 Gosling’s Moongate Tour season at Port Royal Golf Course today.
Among those expected to be in contention in the 18-hole individual stroke play event are professionals Dwayne Pearman, Chaka DeSilva, the tour cofounder, and Scott Roy, as well as amateurs Damian Palanyandi, Kenny Leseur, Jarryd Dillas and Jevon Roberts.
The field also features women golfers Ebonie Cox, Sienna Mosquera, Tariqah Walikraam and Morgan Lightbourne, who are competing in the same division as the men.
Mosquera is heading into the event with momentum after winning on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour in Orlando, Florida, last month.
Among the noticeable absentees are inaugural Gosling’s Moongate Tour Championship winner Camiko Smith and last year’s winner Oliver Betschart.
Pearman, the Order of Merit champion, is looking forward to the new season.
“It should be a good year for the Moongate Tour,” he told The Royal Gazette. “Andrew Trott-Francis and Chaka DeSilva are doing a great job running the event. They have added some new stuff and should get bigger fields.”
As for his form heading into the tournament, Pearman said: “It’s kind of early for me. I am a little rusty but I think as time goes on I will be OK.
“It’s been a little up and down for me with no explanation, but I will take what’s given to me and enjoy it.”
Among the changes on this year’s Tour is the introduction of a two-day match play tournament for the Founder’s Cup, which will feature the top 16 players after the first three rounds, three monthly medal events taking place on Saturdays, the largest prize purse awarded to the Order of Merit champion and a bonus points incentive.
“We are excited over the changes,” DeSilva said. “Andrew has really tried to think long-term and build this thing up.”
DeSilva is also excited by the turnout for the season-opener.
“This is one of the larger fields that we’ve had in the last couple of years and we are excited,” he said. “It’s a new season, we’re off to a strong start and I’m expecting and hoping that we continue the momentum.”
