Oliver Betschart fails to make it through PGA Tour pre-qualifier
Oliver Betschart narrowly missed out on advancing to the final qualifying round of the PGA Tour Texas Children’s Houston Open in Georgetown, Texas.
The local amateur finished tied for eleventh at one-over to finish just two shots shy of securing one of the four available qualifying spots in the 18-hole pre-qualifier among a 48-strong field boasting 31 professionals at Berry Creek Country Club.
“The course wasn’t long, about 6,700 yards, but with tight fairways and 30mph winds, it played tough,” said Betschart, whose round of 73 contained four birdies and five bogeys.
“The greens were fast and pure, but I missed a few short putts that cost me. I’m a bit disappointed but overall I feel good about my game.”
American trio Tyson Dinsmore, Sterling Hurd and Levi Valadez and Canadian Carl St-Arnaud secured the qualifying spots up for grabs.
Betschart headed into the pre-qualifier after coming from behind to win the 15 to 18 boys title in his previous outing in the Prestige Tour Hill Country Open. It was the player’s first victory in the age group and will have done his chances of representing Bermuda in the Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay no harm.
Betschart’s sister Darina also continued her good form by capturing the girls 13 to 14 title in the Emmyevann Shootout in the Hills at Lake Cliff Golf Club in Spicewood, Texas.
Betschart rallied from five shots behind leader Rachel Turk in blustery conditions to grab a share of the lead against her American rival and force a play-off, in which she prevailed.
“I spoke with my dad after the first round and he told me not to give up as there was still a lot of golf to play, so I remembered that and I gave my best until the end,” she said.
“This is the same tournament that Oliver won a few years ago and he also won it in a play-off.”
