Mixed fortunes for Bermudian golfers overseas
Local golfers Nick Jones and Camiko Smith have endured mixed fortunes competing overseas.
Jones produced a top-ten display at the Trinidad and Tobago Golf Open, while Smith narrowly missed the cut at the Clutch Pro Tour’s La Vie Masters in Oman.
Playing among a field which included Darren Sammy, West Indies coach and former captain, Jones finished seventh at 29-over, with a best round of 73.
“Obviously the scores look very high, and they were, but it was a golf course playing very hard as in very bouncy,” Jones told The Royal Gazette.
“The fairways were bouncing and the balls were running off into areas where if you weren’t used to that condition of play sometimes you could get left on the wrong side of the course, and I had no experience at that course like that.”
Jones also found the going tough on the greens.
“I struggled a little bit with my putting,” he said. “Trinidad has a little bit of a different grass and sometimes if you don’t have the experience with that type of grass the ball sits down like a Trinidad crab grass. But I still got a result and did well those last two days the wind picked up.”
Trinidad’s Benjamin Martin won the 72-hole event at St Andrews Golf Club by two shots at four under.
Smith missed the cut at the 54-hole La Vie Masters at La Vie Club in Muscat, Oman, by one shot in only his second appearance competing in the Clutch Tier 1 Spring Series.
The 39-year-old headed into the second round within striking distance of the cut but ultimately came up just short.
“I’m happy with how I finished, dropping two birdies on 16 and 17, but I can’t help feeling gutted overall,” Smith said. “Felt really solid starting out, which makes it frustrating not to have capitalised more.
“Got off to a promising start, nearly rolling in a birdie on the opening hole before sinking one on the second. But golf has a way of keeping you on your toes, a tough stretch of four straight bogeys and a double on the tenth put me in a battle to make up ground.
“Playing La Vie Golf Club has been an incredible experience. Plenty to take away and I’ll be looking to sharpen things up moving forward.”
