Oliver Betschart comes up short at PGA Tour prequalifier

Oliver Betschart’s bid to secure another PGA Tour appearance continues after missing the cut in a Valero Texas Open prequalifier at Fair Oaks Ranch Golf and Country Club in San Antonio.

Playing in chilly conditions in a 110-strong field that included 62 professionals, the 16-year-old local amateur carded a one-over 73 to come up short by three shots.

It all looked very promising for Betschart who put himself in early contention after rattling in two birdies and not relinquishing a single shot on the front nine to make the turn at two under.

The 2024 Gosling’s Moongate Tour Championship winner lost a bit of momentum after carding the first of three bogeys at the twelfth green but still remained on course of making the cut at one-under with four holes to play before heavy downpours brought play to a grinding halt.

However, it ultimately wasn’t to be when play resumed as back-to-back bogeys at the 15th and 16th greens put paid to Betschart’s hopes of reaching the final qualifying round, reserved for the top thirteen players and ties.

It is the second time in as many weeks the promising player has missed the cut at this level having come up short by two shots in his previous outing in the PGA Tour Texas Children’s Houston Open prequalifier at Berry Creek Country Club in Georgetown, Texas.

Betschart made his PGA Tour debut in 2023 competing in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course at age 15 to become the youngest player to play at that level since 2014 and the youngest ever Bermudian to do so.
