Oliver Betschart captured his second title in a month after raising the Cedarberry Bowl in glorious sunshine at Belmont Hills Golf Club on Friday.

The 16-year-old amateur saved the best for last as he carded his lowest round of the 54-hole tournament, a one-over 71 which contained three birdies and four bogeys, to win by a comfortable ten shots at 12-over 222.

“It wasn’t my best showing overall, but it was a fun tournament and really good preparation for the Bermuda Match Play Championship next week,” Betschart told The Royal Gazette. “I know what I need to work on and looking forward to getting back to it.”

The promising player, who went wire-to-wire for the win, held a four-shot advantage over the rest of the field heading into the final round, which he extended to capitalise on the misfortune of nearest rival Arnam Newton.

“The Cedarberry Bowl was a great event and we were lucky with the weather all three days,” Betschart said.

“The tournament was really well run and it was great to see so many juniors out on the course enjoying the game. That’s what it’s all about; getting more young people involved and giving them opportunities to compete and improve.”

Betschart’s win follows on the heels of claiming the 15 to 18 boys title competing at the Prestige Tour Hill Country Open in Fredericksburg, Texas last month.

Newton (232) found the going tough on the way to a seven-over 77, with three birdies, five bogeys, a triple bogey and a double bogey putting paid to his title hopes.

“I had a rough front nine, struggled with both my ball striking and scoring, but turned things around on the back nine and managed to shoot even par,” he said. “It wasn’t a great day overall, but I finished strong.”

“I’d like to thank [event organisers] Mr Bob Legere and Mr Patrick Graham for organising this tournament and Mr Darrin Lewis [Bermuda Golf Association general secretary and scorer] and the BGA for their continued support of junior golf. It was a great time and exceptionally well put together.”

Sa-Qui Robinson, who signed off with an 83, finished third at 36-over 246.

The St David’s and Bermuda Under-19 cricketer was thrilled to play alongside Betschart, who made his PGA Tour debut in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course two years ago.

“It was a good experience to play alongside Oliver Betschart, who played in the PGA, and showed me levels of the game that I’ve never experienced first-hand,” Robinson said.

“Also playing with the best gave me a different view of my game in the sense that watching how the other players carry themselves when approaching their shots, which helped me change my approach and take more time when thinking about what shot to play. This helped me eliminate bad shots, get out of trouble and still shoot a reasonable score.”

Also going wire-to-wire for the win was Lewis MacFarlane (236), who won the White Championship Division by nine shots. Darina Betschart (245) finished runner-up and was also top female in the field, while Lachlan Soutter (251) placed third to complete the podium.

Overnight leader Freddie P Jones (45) held off a charging William Leman (42) to claim the Red 9-Hole Division by three Stableford points. First round leader Joshua Cann (41) finished third, another point back of the winner.

Nicholas Gakundi (19) edged Jack Jones (18) by one Stableford point to win the Novice Division with Zara Soutter (14) taking third, a farther four points back.
