Gymnasts claim overall title at Massachusetts meet
Bermuda gymnasts excelled at the Yellow Jackets Holiday Invitational in Middleton, Massachusetts, their weekend capped by being named overall champions in the superior division.The 13 gymnasts took part in the advanced and superior divisions, the two highest levels of the competition, and grabbed podium finishes in both categories.Eight Bermuda contestants participated in the superior division Tabytha Hofheins, Sadia Wilson, Clara James, Danielle Wall, Zantae Dill, Samantha Soares , Zekiah Lewis, and Anna Francoeur.Hofheins,14, competed in the senior category, earning second overall with a score of 34.250, and won a pair of silver medals on the vault and uneven bars.The remaining gymnasts also came back with an impressive haul of medals from the junior division, led by Wilson who earned three gold medals: vaulting, uneven bars, and all-around.James finished just behind Wilson and was the balance beam champion with a score of 9.35, Bermuda’s highest mark of the meet.The youngest team member, Francoeur, made her debut on the Bermuda team by winning floor and the bronze medal in the all-around.Dill (5th) and Lewis (4th) turned in solid beam routines for second and third respectively, while Wall (6th) shone on the floor, taking a fourth-place finish.Soares (7th) had her top score on balance beam, notching a fifth place.“Our goals for this meet were simple, to go for the new skills that the girls want to add to their routines and, as always, to represent Bermuda positively,” said head coach Duke Nelligan. “We may have had mistakes here and there but the girls remained focused and pulled together as a team.“Now we can go into the New Year with more confidence as the girls prepare for our major competitions of the year. You can see by our strong performances this weekend that the gymnasts are already eager to prove that they want a spot on the 2013 Island Games team.”Participating in the advanced division were Anah Lightbourne, Tomei Talbot, Ava Marshall, Maya Malpas, and Trinity Wilson.Lightbourne,10, was Bermuda’s top finisher, earning a silver medal for her balance beam routine and sixth place all-around.Just behind her was Talbot, whose bronze medal performance on floor helped her to finish seventh overall.Marshall, Malpas and Wilson finished ninth, tenth and 11th respectively.Nelligan and fellow coach Mandi Baughman were also pleased with the young squad, most of whom were competing in the advanced division for the first time.“The girls really had to focus and go for some new, more difficult skills for the first time,” said Baughman.“Everyone stepped up to the challenge and it was great to see them support each other whether they were successful with the new skills or had a mistake.”
