Lightbourne leads team in Florida

A team of 29 gymnasts will leave Bermuda today to compete in the USAIGA World Championships in Orlando, Florida.

More than 1,200 gymnasts from the United States as well as Canada, England and South Africa will take part in the event, which runs until July 3.

Included in Bermuda’s squad is Gemma Lightbourne who will represent the Island in rhythmic gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next month.

Amanda Baughman, Bermuda’s assistant coach, said: “This is the pinnacle competition of the year for the Bermuda gymnastics team.

“The girls had to earn a minimum qualifying score at the International Gymnastics Challenge, held in Bermuda last November, the Manhattan Classic in February, or at our in-house competition last month.

“The athletes who qualified did so through hard work and dedication, training upwards of 17 hours per week.”
