Four of Bermuda’s top gymnasts are honing their skills at the Pan American Gymnastics Union women’s development training camp in Houston, Texas.

Danielle Wall, 15, Samantha Soares, 14, Ava Marshall, 14, and Gianna Webbe, 12, will represent Bermuda at the event, held at the United States team’s National Training Centre. along with Duke Nelligan, the Bermuda Gymnastics Association’s head coach.

They will join some of the top junior gymnasts from the Caribbean, Central and South America, Canada, and the US.

The intensive three-day camp is for gymnasts aged between 13 and 15 is being led by members of the US national coaching staff, all of whom have coached international elite athletes, including World and Olympic champions.

Nelligan said that the athletes selected were among the top junior gymnasts presently representing Bermuda.

“They have made a serious commitment to their sport, training five days a week,” he said.

“We feel that they are prepared physically and mentally to take advantage of what will be a very challenging but also very rewarding experience.

“We hope this is a springboard for them to keep developing into high-level athletes as they reach senior eligibility.”

Nelligan and the gymnasts will return to the Island on Thursday, where they will resume preparations for the annual International Gymnastics Challenge held at the National Training Centre in St David’s on Saturday,

The BGA is welcoming more than 70 gymnasts, aged from 7 to 17, from the US to compete in the event.

The visiting teams, including three from New York — GymNation, NYCElite, and Hill’s Gymnastics — as well as Gymnastics of York from Pennsylvania, will compete in three divisions: Copper Level (Beginner gymnasts), Bronze Level (Intermediate gymnasts) and Silver, Gold, Platinum Levels (advanced gymnasts).
