Bermuda gymnasts wrap up season in style in Canada
A strong travelling contingent from the Bermuda Gymnastics Association concluded their competitive season in style with a stellar showing at the Burlington Spring Cup in Canada.
Chief among the 12 gymnasts was Tse Burgess, who followed up her starring role at the Magical Classic in Florida, in February, by topping the points standings at Level 8 on the first day after placing third on vault and second on bars and beam.
Also competing at that level were Sean Lawrence, who came out on top in the bar discipline, while Ajana Patton was first on the vault and came third on the bar to finish third overall.
Patton and Burgess also joined forces on the second day of competition in the pairs event, with the latter winning on the vault and the pair finishing second overall.
There was also a number of impressive performances at Xcel Gold, in which Hayleigh Cherry placed third on vault, second on beam and second on floor to claim overall victory. She was closely followed by Lexi Daniel, who won the beam and floor disciplines, with Maddie Bigley rounding out the podium after finishing second on vault and bars.
There was also delight for Kennedy Kowalski, who topped the Level 6 points scoring after winning the bars, beam and floor disciplines as well as finishing second in vault. Carina Bortoli also enjoyed a strong showing with a third-place finish on bars, while Helena Baillie placed fourth on floor.
Bortoli and Kowalski, were also in action on day two, finishing third on the bars, while three gymnasts were also in action in the Xcel Silver competition.
Sadie Hocking – competing overseas for the first time – placed first on beam and second on floor for fourth overall, with McKenna Redcliffe fourth on vault, third on beam and second on floor and Chantal Cheng fourth on vault, bars and beam.
“The girls had a fantastic experience to wrap up their competitive season and are already looking forward to the next,” said coach Anna Balada. “We’re extremely proud on how the gymnasts represented the gym and Bermuda.
“These results would not have been possible without the support of the families and the hard work and care from the BGA coaches towards our gymnasts, to keep them happy doing what they love, while achieving fantastic results.”
Balada also took the opportunity to welcome any aspiring gymnasts to take part in open tryouts to join BGA for next season.
“We’re also pleased to announce that on May 20 we’re going to have team try outs at BGA in St David’s for all the gymnasts out there that would like to join our competitive or developmental programmes next season,” she added.
