Bermuda gymnasts win nine medals at Carifta Championships
Bermuda’s gymnasts impressed at the inaugural Carifta Gymnastics Championships, winning nine medals. including finishing third in the Level 4 team event.
The two-day competition in Kingston, Jamaica, featured gymnasts from across the Caribbean taking part in a variety of disciplines, including vault, bars, beam, and floor.
Eva Wright was the most successful gymnast with four medals. Taking part in Level 6, the 11-year-old scooped gold in the all around competition, beam and vault before settling for silver in the floor.
Ashanti-Sarai Darko enjoyed success in Level 4, clinching silver in the vault and beam. Isobel Stones was awarded bronze at the same level in the vault, while McKenna Redcliffe was second on Level 4 bars.
In the Jamaican Championships, which was held shortly after the Carifta event, Nicole Burrows won silver in the Level 3 vault.
Coaches Becky Wentling and Frederick Nicolas were pleased with the performances produced by some of the island’s youngest athletes.
"We are incredibly proud of our gymnasts and their accomplishments at Carifta,” the coaches said.
“It has been inspiring to see their growth and determination pay off. We look forward to more success and continued development in the coming years.
“We extend our congratulations to all the gymnasts who participated and earned medals. We are excited to continue supporting and cheering on our Bermuda gymnasts as they set their sights on future competitions.”
Peter James, the Gymnastics Federation of Bermuda vice-president and head of the Carifta delegation, was impressed by how the young Bermudians held their own against countries with bigger teams.
“The Gymnastics Federation of Bermuda is committed to fostering the growth and development of gymnastics in Bermuda,’’ James said.
“Our attendance at this meet helped us to achieve this goal. With a relatively small team of 17, our girls had an impressive medal haul of 9.
“Considering that there were over 200 gymnasts in the meet, with Jamaica fielding 71 gymnasts, I couldn't be more proud of our performance.”
