Minister highlights the need for more nurses
The importance of nurses in Bermuda’s ageing population was driven home at the 2011 Nursing Expo yesterday.Health Minister Zane DeSilva opened the annual event, organised by the Bermuda Nurses’ Association in recognition of May as Nurses’ Month.“Nurses are an invaluable part of our healthcare system, and we always need more Bermudians to join the profession,” he said.“This is especially true when we look toward the future and realise that Bermuda will need an increasing number of nurses to care of our ageing population.”He said that by 2025, Bermuda’s seniors will outnumber the youth. The expo aims to promote nursing as a career option, as well as promoting advanced training opportunities.“If we are to adequately address the health needs of our changing society and prepare for the emerging challenges, we must do all we can to strengthen the profession,” Mr DeSilva said.“There are more and more helping professions available to the community all the time, and it is important for the public to understand the roles, functions and scope of practice for nursing.”Useful website: www.gov.bm.
