The Department of Health will be offering an additional clinic session today to offer flu shots as the flu season is expected to build.The session will take place at the Hamilton Health Centre at 67 Victoria Street between 9am and 1pm.The vaccine costs $10, but is free for seniors.The Department said earlier this week that Influenza B appears to be circulating around the Island, and additional cases are expected.A spokeswoman said: “Influenza is a highly contagious viral infection which spreads from person to person via infected droplets from coughs and sneezes.“For most people it is not generally a serious condition, but is often extremely unpleasant and temporarily debilitating. For some, however, flu can be quite dangerous, even life threatening, because it may increase the risk of developing serious complication such as pneumonia or respiratory failure.”Most people recover after several days, requiring extra fluids, rest and ibuprofen or acetaminophen to control fever and body aches, but parents are warned that children and teenagers should never be given aspirin to treat flu-like symptoms.
