Kitson Group give new hospital wing a welcome boost
A donation of $100,000 by the Kitson Group has pushed the fundraising campaign for Bermuda’s new hospital wing to the $30 million mark.
Brothers Kirk and Richard Kitson handed over the cheque to Bermuda Hospitals Board chairman Jonathan Brewin to mark the 95th birthday of their mother Elizabeth.
“We do so in the hope that other organisations who have the wherewithal to donate will do so,” Kirk Kitson, president of Kitson group, told The Royal Gazette.
“The hospital needs to raise another $10 million in order to be paid for, which we want to see happen.”
The corporate group, which includes Gorham’s, the Rosedon Hotel and Windsor Place, is “all paid for”, he said — “so we’re in a good financial position to make this gift.”
The gift was also made in memory of Geoffrey Kitson, who founded the original family business in 1947.
Thanking the Kitsons for the donation, Mr Brewin said construction work at the hospital was “moving swiftly”, with around 500 contractors on site each day.
BHB will go public “in the next few weeks”, he said, on the opening date for the new acute care wing. That date also marks the deadline for a one-off payment of $40 million to Paget Health Services for building the facility. The payment is to be covered by donations raised by the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust (BHCT) through its “Why It Matters” campaign.
Originally set to open on April 1, 2014, the acute care wing is now set for completion at a later date next year.
BHCT yesterday reported that it has realised $30 million, with a spokeswoman added: “We will continue our work of fundraising during year end with the expectation of successfully meeting our target of $40 million in 2014.”
