The public is invited to attend the final day of an international science conference focusing on diabetes.

The annual Bermuda Principles Impact Conference introduces an Education Day this year which will be open to the public on Saturday at the Fairmont Southampton.

This year’s theme is Focus on Diabetes. Carika Weldon, founder and executive director of the Bermuda Principles Foundation Fund, hopes that hosting international scientists will help to raise awareness of the latest research and technology in this area.

The Bermuda Principles Foundation Fund is a non-profit initiative of the Bermuda Community Foundation.

There will be a number of free activities, including an information session about genetics and diabetes from 11am to 12.30pm.

Kameron Young and Dr Weldon, local researchers. will share findings on the bitter taste receptor and sugar preference among Bermuda’s population.

This will be followed by a lecture delivered by Professor Lorna Harries from the University of Exeter about her latest research on diabetes.

There will be a Youth Parliament debate on the sugar tax from 1.30pm to 3.30pm and then from 4pm to 5pm Kate Creasey, president of the Grow More Foundation, will discuss GMOs and how diet can impact diabetes.

The Bermuda Diabetes Association will be providing free screenings. The DREAM Centre at Bermuda Hospitals Board, Fountain Health and Kameron’s Lab, will be taking samples for their genetic study, Holistic Fitness Bermuda.

The Argus Group has donated a black Fitbit Aria 2 smart scale as a giveaway prize.
