City businesses were reminded about how they can play a part to reduce the number of rodents on Hamilton streets.

They were asked to keep bin lids closed and to clean bins regularly to prevent an “open invitation” to rats, that appeared to be plaguing parts of the island.

A City of Hamilton spokeswoman said the message went out after recent reports of increased sightings of the pests.

Patrick Cooper, the City engineer, said: “We remind businesses to ensure that their wheelie bin can close and that the lid is secured when closed.

“An overflowing bin, with lid open, is an open invitation for rats.

“We also ask that businesses clean their bins periodically to ensure that any grease or food debris that may have been captured inside is disposed of.

“We also seek to remind the businesses that the bins must be removed from the sidewalks after collection.

“We implore the public to be responsible and to do their part to not attract rats.”

The spokeswoman explained that the City’s wheelie bin programme meant more than 450 receptacles — for waste and recyclable material — were handed out to businesses.

She said companies could receive their first bin at no charge and that more information could be found on the City’s website.
