Barbara Ball scholarship to open

The Ministry of Health would like to inform the public that the application period for the Dr. Barbara Ball Public Health Scholarship will open on February 10. The application period will conclude on 30 April 2020.

The Ministry of Health awards the Dr. Barbara Ball Public Health Scholarship annually to students seeking careers or professional development in public health.

Scholarships are awarded for a combination of academic achievement, financial need and choice of healthcare profession that would be most beneficial to public health in Bermuda. Current public health priorities are allied health (rehabilitative therapies), nursing, social work, environmental health, occupational safety and health, post-graduate health economics, Doctor of Medicine (public health need), counselling, Doctor of Dentistry, dental hygiene, and Clinical Psychology (doctorate). Applicants must be a resident of Bermuda, possess Bermuda status or PRC, be accepted to an approved programme of study in an accredited institution; and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Only applicants with proven financial need and studying a profession necessary to public health in Bermuda will be considered.

Dr. Barbara Bertha Ball was the first Bermudian-born female physician to practice medicine in Bermuda, and was a tireless champion for human rights and equality for all. Following her graduation from Liverpool University Medical School in 1949, Dr. Ball returned to Bermuda in 1954 and devoted her life to those in need. The Government of Bermuda is pleased to recognise her by awarding scholarships to public health professionals in her honour.
