Diabetes charity launches fundraising wall

The public was asked to help build a “wall of hope” to support people living with diabetes in a campaign launched today.

The Bermuda Diabetes Association said it hoped people would want to recognise loved ones as part of a fundraising drive for its new centre in Hamilton.

Debbie Jones, the charity’s chairwoman, said: “We’ve had so much support to build this new centre.

“It takes so many hearts and minds to make something like this become a reality and we’ve been blessed to have so many corporate sponsors and individual donors step up to help.

“With very little time to go until the opening, we are looking to the public to help us cross the finish line.”

The association asked people to commemorate a loved one, recognise someone who has been an inspiration in their battle against diabetes or to show their support for the organisation.

Ms Jones explained that the team worked with Eye4Design, an interior design company, to create “a beautiful Wall of Hope and Inspiration on which will be recorded the names of those so commemorated or recognised”.

The association is expected to move into the new Hilton Hill Diabetes Resource Centre, on Princess Street, where it will have 2,000 square feet for its pharmacy, education rooms and offices.

Ms Jones earlier said the centre would be “a one-stop shop — a hub” for therapy sessions, learning and healthy cooking classes in its kitchen.

She said last September: “Diabetes, unfortunately, is a growing problem. A study in 1995 showed 11 per cent of the population had it. Now you could say it’s anything from 14 to 20 per cent.”

A spokeswoman for the association said this week: “The new centre will continue and enhance the association’s mission in reducing the prevalence of diabetes and improving the lives of those affected.”

She asked the public: “Is there someone who inspires you? Perhaps someone with type 1 diabetes facing the daily tasks of diabetes care with bravery and commitment?

“Or a loved one who turned a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes into a challenge, and took control of their health and wellness?

“Or someone who is dedicated in supporting the cause of diabetes?

“Living with diabetes is challenging whether it is type 1 or type 2 diabetes, or whether one is affected oneself or caring for one who is.

“People living with diabetes make on average 180 extra decisions each day such as testing blood sugars, adjusting insulin, counting carbohydrates, all designed to keep blood sugars within a normal range so as to stay healthy and avoid complications.

“Those affected don’t wear capes, but they are everyday heroes worth celebrating.”

Money raised from the sponsorship of boards on the wall of hope will be used to fund the work of the charity.

The spokeswoman added: “The association is asking for a minimum donation of $1,000, which will go towards the centre’s many needs for supporting the community.”

She told potential sponsors: “In return, you will have a name and message of your choice which will live in perpetuity on the Wall of Hope and Inspiration at the Hilton Hill Diabetes Resource Centre.”
